'You Want To Be The Pebble In The Pond That Creates The Ripple For Change' - Tim Cook

Back to Crassula removal after our award success - June 24th 2024

We may have mentioned (did we mention it?) that S.W.A.M.P. were awarded the Group Award in the Rivers and Wetlands category, as sponsored by the Norfolk Rivers Trust, at the Norfolk Community Biodiversity Awards on Sunday 23rd June 2024.

However, the following day we returned to the issue at large - or at least one of the most pressing - that of removing the invasive Crassula from the pond.

With the water levels still relatively high, it was necessary to don waders for the intrepid ones, and negotiate the almost invisible undulating terrain to grab handfuls of plants (by hand or by rake) and float them via ingeniously designed buckets wedged into rubber rings and foam floats to the edge of the pond. There, the foliage would be piled onto upturned crates on a large tarpaulin to drain and be bagged and removed at a later date.

It was an excellent session, full of hard work, yet determination and good humour throughout. Our thanks go to all our regulars and volunteers who have helped and supported us in our efforts so far. We hope the difference is there for all to see and enjoy - as well as the knowledge of the benefits to all the biodiversity (and plenty of new species to the area) who are taking advantage of their improved environment.

Keep an eye on these pages for our next S.W.A.M.P. sessions at Morston Pond, where the Crassula clearing continues - (note: thanks to excellent advice we received at the awards ceremony we will not be removing any more Parrot's Feather until September, to avoid distrurbing any potential newt eggs which may be laid amongst the plant!)
