Educational Day - 1st September 2025

On Monday 1st September 2025, in conjunction with Farming in Protected Landscapes, S.W.A.M.P. held an Educational Day, to showcase our work improving the environment and biodiversity in and around Morston Pond.

We were joined by renowned Crassula expert Julia Mumford-Smith, who gave an introductory talk detailing the problems with the invasive aquatic species Crassula helmsii and was on hand throughout to give advice and answer questions to our volunteer community group and guests.

We were able to present a variety of techniques we had established since the group's inception in late Autumn 2022, in order to attempt to rid the pond of the plant, which, as the Norfolk Wildlife Trust notes: "grows throughout the year, without a dormant period, and can form dense mats on waterbodies such as ponds and ditches that shade and smother other aquatic vegetation that provides creatures such as frogs, newts and dragonflies a place to hide, feed and lay eggs.

The species is very hard to control and can spread quickly from tiny fragments which can drift in the water or be carried on clothing or animals, including humans, dogs, birds or deer."

Below are some photographs of the very successful day ...
